Celebrating 15 Years of Martus: A Journey of Vision, Dedication, and Growth

Celebrating 15 Years of Martus: A Journey of Vision, Dedication, and Growth

Bill Cox, the founder of Martus, didn’t set out to create a software company. Growing up in a rural town, his aspirations were grounded in the idea of making a stable living as a math teacher. But as life often does, it led him down a different path. Martus, a company now recognized for its impactful budgeting and reporting solutions, is celebrating 15 years. Today, with record growth and a commitment to continuous innovation, Martus stands as a testament to Bill’s vision, dedication, and adaptability.

The Spark of an Idea

Bill’s career journey began in industrial engineering and software programming, but his passion for helping organizations with budgeting and financial management found its roots in his involvement with church boards and nonprofit boards. As a longstanding member of these organizations, Bill saw firsthand the complex financial needs of churches and nonprofits and their struggles with limited, outdated tools.

These organizations needed a solution to manage multi-layered budgets across campuses, projects, and departments. While working with his son Pastor Bradley's church finance team, the need to streamline budgeting processes became even more personal. This environment planted the seeds for Martus, a company designed to empower organizations with accessible, effective financial tools.

By 2008, with years of software industry experience and a genuine desire to make a difference, Bill took the leap to found Martus. While the company initially focused on faith-based nonprofits, it soon found that the demand for efficient, affordable budgeting software extended far beyond churches and religious institutions. Large nonprofits, complex organizations, and even educational institutions were drawn to Martus’s straightforward yet powerful tools.

Built by Listening

From the beginning, Martus’s growth has been driven by listening. Bill recalls that in Martus's early days, he was deeply involved in product demonstrations, sales, and training, often identifying unique needs in real time. As he engaged directly with customers, he uncovered opportunities to make Martus better fit customer needs, easier to use, and improve decision-making. This approach allowed Martus to continually refine its software based on customer feedback, building a solution that felt both intuitive and robust.

By 2015, Martus had evolved to handle the complex requirements of multi-campus churches and larger nonprofits, setting it apart from other solutions that were either too simplistic or prohibitively expensive.

As Bill recalls:

“By putting myself in the customer’s shoes and asking myself the questions, ‘what would I need to do my job,’ real solutions emerged that customers really liked. Our product was solving real needs, and from the very beginning to now, customers have told us they love it.”

This customer-centric approach has kept Martus focused on constant improvement, with features built to meet the real-world needs of its users.

Values at the Core

The culture at Martus is rooted in values that Bill has held close throughout his career: transparency, integrity, and outperformance. Inspired by principles of trust and ethical practices, Martus emphasizes a supportive, responsive environment for both customers and employees.

Bill believes that Martus's success lies in its dedication to serving customers with integrity, treating employees with respect, and continually striving to improve. Bill notes:

“Our goal has always been to provide customers with reliable solutions and exceptional service. We want to be very responsive, care about our customers’ needs, and ensure that our product remains solid and dependable. Making collaboration easy and affordable is a key component of achieving this goal”

This vision extends to Martus's staff and reflects not only Bill’s professional standards but also his personal philosophy of service, stemming from his commitment to “loving your neighbor as yourself.”

Looking Forward: A Record Year and Beyond

This year, Martus is celebrating more than just an anniversary. The company is experiencing record growth, fueled by its expanding partnerships and reputation for excellence. With an established presence across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and even South Africa, Martus’s impact is now global.

Partnerships with leading accounting systems like Sage Intacct, Sage 100, Microsoft, Quickbooks, Netsuite, Acumatica, and legacy platforms have positioned Martus as a versatile solution, meeting the diverse needs of nonprofits and beyond. These integrations make Martus easy to implement, easy to use with current data, and affordable

Looking ahead, Martus is strengthening its partner program, which Bill sees as pivotal to their future. The program has connected Martus to customers in sectors they wouldn’t typically reach, such as major players in professional sports associations. Bill remarks:

“There are so many organizations out there who could benefit from what we offer. With the right partnerships, we’re expanding our reach and letting even more organizations see the impact Martus can make.”

What’s Next for Martus?

With a seasoned marketing team and a growing network of partners, the company is poised to reach new heights. Bill has set his sights on expanding the company’s footprint into large accounting ecosystems, a move that will bring Martus’s tools to more organizations in need of efficient, transparent budgeting solutions.

Reflecting on the journey, Bill is proud of Martus’s evolution and remains focused on the future. He points out:

"We've come a long way, but there are still countless organizations out there in need of what we offer. Our mission is to make budgeting and reporting accessible and impactful for everyone, and I look forward to where Martus will go in the years to come."

Fifteen years after its founding, Martus continues to thrive, guided by Bill’s unwavering dedication and commitment to making financial management simpler, more effective, and accessible for all. Here’s to the next chapter.
